Parenthood is an incredible journey—filled with moments of awe, joy, and exhaustion. As a mother of four and with experience photographing and soothing over 400 newborns, I've learned a few essentials to help you survive the newborn stage.

Invest in a Newborn Swaddle

Swaddling helps babies feel secure, similar to the womb, and can help them sleep better. Opt for easy-to-use swaddle wraps with Velcro or zippers to save time and hassle during nighttime changes.

Here in one that worked WONDERS for my little ones during the newborn stage:

White Noise Machine

A white noise machine was my saving grace for my light sleepers. White noise can help soothe newborns to sleep by mimicking the sounds they were used to in the womb. Choose a machine with adjustable volume and various sound options, like waves or rain, to find what works best for your baby. If you've had a Newborn session with me, you know I have one going the entire session! It helps keep those sweet babies relaxed.

Baby Monitor

A baby monitor allows you to keep an eye (and ear) on your baby while they sleep, especially if they’re in a separate room. This was my saving grace whenever I needed to shower or do something in the kitchen and would hear the 'phantom cries'. The baby monitor gave me some peace of mind. Consider a video monitor with night vision to check on your baby without disturbing them.

Bassinet or Co-Sleeper

For the first 3 months, I highly recommend having a bassinet in your room before transferring to a crib. I loved having baby within reach, it made night feedings a lot smoother. Especially if you plan on breastfeeding, it makes it very easy to grab baby and feed. I recommend looking for a bassinet with breathable mesh sides for safety and visibility.

Breastfeeding Pillow or Feeding Support

A supportive pillow helps make breastfeeding or bottle feeding more comfortable by reducing strain on your arms, neck, and back. Look for pillows with machine-washable covers for easy cleaning milk spills and spit up. I loved the Boppy brand pillows.

I hope this was helpful :)

Please keep in mind that these are only recommendations as to what worked for me and my babies. Every baby is different and parents always know best! The newborn stage is exhausting, but so incredible. As cliche as it sounds, it really does fly by! Enjoy every second of those sweet baby snuggles.
